Casting on with Dandelion, the newest addition to our selection of Madelinetosh yarns. This single ply custom blend of 90% superwash merino wool and 10% fine linen, is a fingering weight yarn. So far it feels similar to knitting with Tosh Merino Light, but the linen gives it a bit more of a rustic look.
We are open our usual hours over the Easter long weekend: Fri & Sat 10 to 5 and Sun noon to 4. We are closed on Monday and there is no Knit Night. If you haven’t knit a bunny by Little Cotton Rabbits, then this a perfect weekend to do so. They are so adorable that you won’t be able to stop at one – I know I couldn’t! Rowan Wool Cotton 4 ply is recommended for the clothes and we have a great selection of colours.
Take your first step into the world of spinning your own yarn by learning to spin on a drop spindle. You will learn the basic principles of creating a single ply yarn and then how to combine plies and finish your yarn. This is a very portable technique which just requires some fiber, a drop spindle and no previous spinning experience is required. This class will be held on Tues April 1 & 8 from 7 to 9 pm. Phone in or drop by the store to sign up.
We’re mad about our new Madbird needle organizers and project bags. Organize your DPNs, circulars and interchangeable needles in these cheerful print cases. Their square bottom project bags are lined with matching print fabric and have a heavy duty draw cord. The Deluxe Pattern Wallet, with attached zip pouch is perfect for holding your pattern and notions.
There were some amazing felted works of art created today by the students of the Basics of Felting class. Starting with an inspirational picture, Barbara guided them through the basic steps of both wet and dry felting. Tomorrow students will be creating needle felted butterflies like the ones you may have seen hanging at the store. It’s not too late to sign up for this introductory course and the details can be found on the classes page of the website along with descriptions of other felting classes such as needle felted easter eggs and sushi. We carry a full selection...
Thanks to Heidi of Vegan Yarns for visiting the store yesterday to launch this 100% certified organic, colour-grown cotton. No chemicals are used to grow or colour the spinning fiber and yarn. All harvesting and colour sorting is done by hand, just as it has been since the domestication of cotton in Peru over 5,ooo years ago. For those of you who missed Heidi, we have a beautiful display and inspiring samples. Also, Heidi has promised to come back to the store to teach a cotton spinning class.
Black Sheep Yarns is the first LYS to partner with Vegan Yarn to offer this luscious-all-natural yarn and fibre. Pakucho cotton is grown and processed in Peru using traditional methods and biological pest-control, making it perfect for little ones and anyone who likes their knitting au-naturel. From Vanilla Cream to Deep Green and mauve Fifo, the colours are naturally occurring and free of dye. We will carry three different weights of yarn and also spinning cottons. Drop by the store Saturday Jan 25th and meet our friend Heidi, owner of Vegan Yarn and discover this beautiful 100% certified organic cotton....
We’re tidying up after a busy holiday season and clear out in our annual sale. No sooner did we empty a few shelves when huge boxes of yarn were delivered. We have some new shades of Cascade 220 Superwash, including some nice heathered ones. Seven boxes of Madelinetosh, containing mostly Tosh DK but also some Lace and Merino Light, has our shelves bulging with colour. We have a good selection of Malabrigo Nube, a spinning fiber in some of their most loved colours. And there is much more to come!
